Senator Tuberville Calls for Funding to be Pulled from UN

UN did not pass a resolution condemning Hamas for its attacks on Israel.

Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama called for the United States to withdraw all funding from the United Nations after the UN declined to pass a resolution that would have condemned the Hamas attack on Israeli civilians.

Senator Tuberville said the UN “can’t pass anything for human rights, they have people on the Human Rights Commission that get an opportunity to vote that have no human rights, so the UN is out of date and it’s non—productive, it does nothing for the world, much less the United States of America.”

The senator stated, “The UN needs to be either revamped or closed down and we’ve got a lot of money [in it], we basically pay for the UN and they do nothing for the United States of America.”

On November 2, Iran became chair of the UN human rights forum, having been appointed last May. The executive director of UN Watch, an independent non-governmental human rights group based in Geneva, asked, “Why did you name the Islamic Republic of Iran as Chair of the UN Human Rights Council Social Forum, starting on November 2nd? How can you elevate a regime that beats, blinds, tortures, and rapes women who demand their rights?”

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, “The U.S. government contributed about $12.5 billion to the United Nations in 2021, the most recent fiscal year with full data available. About one-quarter of this total was assessed and the rest was voluntary.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For U.S. governing officials as they consider the amount of support the United States offers the United Nations.
  • For wisdom for members of Congress as they take up appropriations bills to determine government funding.
